CFRP screws from kohlefaser.de

Carbon screws are becoming increasingly important in industry. They offer high strength combined with low weight and are corrosion resistant. These and other characteristics make them particularly attractive for a variety of applications. Carbon fiber bolts can be used to create innovative designs and efficient lightweight construction that save energy and improve performance.

The CFRP bolts from kohlefaser.de have several outstanding characteristics. They are made of 60 percent carbon fiber and are ultra-light, reducing weight by up to 80 percent. They are X-ray transparent, non-magnetic and corrosion resistant. With a density of 1.5 g/cm³ (grams per cubic centimeter), they offer high strength at a low weight and are electrically conductive. They are available from us in various lengths and formats.

Our screws are well suited for use with other custom-made carbon parts such as tubes, plates, angles or rods.

Characteristics of our carbon fiber screws

The advantageous characteristics of carbon fiber screws make them an attractive choice in many areas:

Lightweight
Carbon fiber screws are up to 80 percent lighter than metal screws, which allows for significant weight reduction in construction projects.

High strength
Despite their low weight, CFRP screws provide high mechanical strength for demanding applications.

Corrosion resistance
Carbon fiber screws are resistant to chemical attack and corrosion, making them ideal for aggressive environments.

Electrical conductivity
CFRP screws are electrically conductive. Therefore, they are useful in special applications that require conductivity.

X-ray transparency
Carbon screws are X-ray transparent, which makes them particularly valuable for medical technology.

Non-magnetic
Carbon fiber screws are non-magnetic, making them ideal for applications in electronics and medical technology.

Water-repellent
With a water repellency rate of 99.97 percent, they are extremely resistant to moisture.

Temperature resistance
CFRP screws can be sterilized up to 150 degrees Celsius, making them suitable for high-temperature applications.

How carbon fiber screws are made

Carbon fiber screws are made in a special forming process. The so-called extrusion molding process offers high material efficiency while producing precise components with excellent surface quality and the typical advantages of carbon.

Individual steps of the extrusion molding process:

  1. Preparation of the raw material
Carbon fiber composites made of carbon fibers and a resin matrix are formed into blanks.

  2. Heating the material
To increase the moldability of the resin matrix, the preform is heated to a specific temperature while the carbon fibers retain their structural integrity.

  3. Forming by impact extrusion
Under high pressure, the material is pressed through a die, giving it the desired shape.

  4. Cooling and hardening
After the pressing process, the component cools and hardens, reaching its final strength.

  5. Reworking
If necessary, the screws are reworked to create specific threads or surface textures.

Important installation tips for carbon fiber screws

To avoid damage and ensure optimal performance, there are a few important installation tips to keep in mind when installing carbon fiber screws. Following these guidelines will help ensure that carbon fiber screws are used safely and efficiently. These precautions will also help to avoid potential damage and ensure the long-term strength and safety of the carbon fiber screws:

Lower torque
Carbon fiber screws require significantly less torque than metal screws because the material is more sensitive to overloading. Compared to metal screws, carbon fiber screws develop high preload forces even when subjected to low forces. This is a major advantage of carbon fiber screws in high-load applications. Therefore, they do not have to be tightened as much as metal screws. Over-tightening can damage the screw.

Lubrication
Before assembly, the screw is coated with grease under the head and on the thread. This reduces friction during tightening and prevents excessive mechanical stress at certain points on the screw, which significantly extends the service life.

Suitable tools
Special tools are used to assemble carbon fiber screws so as not to damage the material. Avoid unsuitable (e.g., too hard) Allen keys or wrenches.

Corrosion protection
Although carbon fiber screws are corrosion resistant, electrochemical corrosion can occur in contact with metals such as aluminum. Therefore, insulation is used between carbon and metal parts to avoid galvanic corrosion.

Combination with other materials
When carbon fiber screws are combined with metal elements, a torque wrench should be used to check the exact tightening force and not to overload the material.

Regular inspection
Carbon fiber screws should be regularly inspected to ensure that they are firmly seated, as they are often used in dynamic areas – especially in critical applications such as motorsports or aerospace.

Carbon fiber screws in practice: possible applications

Due to their unique characteristics, such as low weight, high strength and corrosion resistance, CFRP screws offer a wide range of possible applications. Above all, they are irreplaceable in many high-tech areas:

Aerospace
Due to their light weight and high strength, CFRP screws are frequently used in aircraft and spacecraft. They make it possible to reduce weight and thus reduce fuel costs.

Motorsport
In motorsport, carbon fiber screws are popular because they reduce vehicle weight while withstanding high mechanical loads. This improves vehicle performance and efficiency.

Medical technology
Carbon fiber screws are used in medical technology because they are X-ray transparent and non-magnetic. This makes them ideal for use in medical devices or implants.

Electrical engineering
Since CFRP screws are electrically conductive and non-magnetic, they are well suited for applications in sensitive electronic devices.

Automotive
Carbon fiber screws are increasingly used in automotive engineering, especially in highly stressed components of sports cars, to save weight while ensuring high stability.

Model making and drone technology
Due to their low weight and stability, they are also widely used in model making and drones to improve performance and maneuverability.

How to properly cut carbon fiber screws by yourself

Cutting carbon fiber screws requires special care because the material is somewhat sensitive to improper handling. Follow these steps to ensure that the carbon fiber screw does not lose stability or splinter when you shorten it.

Step-by-step instructions for properly cutting carbon fiber screws yourself:

  1. Prepare the tools you need
Use a fine-toothed saw (ideally diamond-coated) or a cutting disc suitable for carbon fiber. A vise and fine sandpaper are also required.

  2. Fix the screw
Carefully clamp the carbon fiber screw in a vise to stabilize it. To avoid damaging the thread, it is best to use soft jaws.

  3. Marking
Mark the point at which the screw is to be shortened, for example with an adhesive tape, to get an exact cutting line.

  4. Cut slowly
To prevent fraying of the carbon fibers and overheating of the material, cut the screw slowly and evenly.

  5. Rework
After cutting, smooth the end of the screw with fine sandpaper to remove sharp edges.

  6. Check the thread
After shortening, check the thread to make sure it is clean and intact. If it is slightly damaged, use a tap to touch it up.
