Carbon plates from kohlefaser.de can be manufactured in a thickness of 0.15 to 50.0 millimeters.

In terms of length, we can produce a carbon plate up to a maximum of 2500x1600 millimeters. The carbon plate consists of 3-4 layers of carbon fiber fabric per 1.0 millimeter thickness.

What are CFRP plates?


CFRP plates (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) are plates that are made from carbon fibers and combined with a plastic resin (e.g. epoxy resin) as a matrix material. These plates offer high strength and rigidity with low weight, which makes them interesting for various applications in industry, model making, and, above all, in the aerospace industry.

Carbon plate: Characteristics


Carbon plates have excellent chemical, thermal, and mechanical characteristics. CFRP plates are X-ray transparent and non-magnetic. Compared to plates made from other raw materials, carbon plates have higher mechanical characteristics and a lower weight.

A carbon plate is also electrically conductive; shielding cases are made from CFRP plates. A CFRP plate made from wet laminate has a high-gloss surface that is largely free of bubbles and pores. Prepreg plates have a silk-matt surface that is largely free of bubbles and pores.

Material characteristics


Carbon plates are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). They are characterized by an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, which means that they are extremely stable and very light at the same time. Other important characteristics include high temperature resistance, low thermal expansion, and excellent corrosion resistance. These plates are suitable for applications where both high mechanical requirements and low weight are crucial.

Fiber orientation


The fiber orientation plays a decisive role in the mechanical characteristics of the plates. As standard, the fibers are arranged in a so-called “quasi-isotropic” layer. This means that the fibers run in several directions (for example 0°, 90°, +45°, -45°). This ensures uniform strength in all directions. There are also plates with unidirectional fiber orientation, where the fibers only run in one direction and offer maximum strength in this particular direction.

Surface texture


The surfaces of carbon plates are basically variable. They are often available in a glossy, smooth finish, which makes the typical carbon weave visible. There are also matt surfaces or those with a special texture for applications where slip resistance is required, for example. The surface quality is generally very high and is ideal for visually sophisticated applications.

Sizes


Carbon plates from Carbonteam are available in various standard sizes - in formats up to 1200x2500 millimeters. Depending on requirements, we can also produce customized sizes. The thickness of the plates typically varies between 0.2 and 50 millimeters, with thinner plates being more flexible and thicker plates being stiffer and more resilient.

Is carbon long-lasting?


Carbon is extremely long-lasting as it is highly resistant to weathering, corrosion, and chemical substances. The material retains its mechanical characteristics for many years, even under extreme conditions. Carbon is therefore ideal for applications where long-term reliability and stability are required.

How are carbon plates manufactured?

CFRP plates, as well as other semi-finished carbon fiber products, can be drilled, milled, sawn, sanded, glued, and otherwise manufactured very well.

Production using the prepreg process


The prepreg process is a processing method in which the carbon fibers are impregnated in advance with a resin (usually epoxy resin). These pre-treated fibers are formed into carbon plates or other components under controlled conditions - often at elevated temperature and pressure. The prepreg process is primarily used in areas where the highest material requirements exist, such as in aerospace or motorsport.

Notes on the self processing of CFRP plates


CFRP plates can be manufactured in various ways:

Drilling: Use sharp carbide drill bits to achieve clean holes and avoid fraying.

Sawing: For cutting CFRP plates, fine-toothed saws or diamond-coated tools are ideal to enable precise cuts.

Milling: Milling work should be carried out with special milling heads for carbon in order to separate the fibers cleanly.

Bonding: CFRP plates can be bonded well with epoxy or special adhesives. The bonding surfaces should be clean and free of grease beforehand.

Precautionary measures when manufacturing CFRP plates


To protect your own health and ensure safe manufacture of CFRP plates, the following safety regulations should be observed:

Workplace: Work in a well-ventilated area or use extraction equipment to remove any dust produced immediately.

Respiratory protection: When working with CFRP plates, fine dust particles and fibers are produced that are harmful to health. Always wear an FFP2 or FFP3 respirator to avoid inhalation.

Eye protection: Safety goggles are necessary to protect the eyes from dust and splinters.

Hand protection: Wearing cut-resistant gloves protects against injuries caused by sharp edges and splinters.
